MARGARITA was discovered by Christopher Columbus on August 15th, 1498, and claimed by Emperor Carlos V on March 18th, 1525. By petition of Jose Cortes de Madariaga, one of the leaders of the Independence movement in Venezuela, our state was named as Nueva Esparta on May 12th, 1817.
